It may be the largest one-time giveaway by a TV host ever… but this time, with a heart.
John Oliver, host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, uncovered how easy it is for virtually anyone to buy zombie debt—debt that’s so old you can no longer be sued for it—for pennies on the dollar and try to collect it using all kind of unsavory tactics.  One collector was even caught on tape threatening to kill a person’s dog if they didn’t cough up some cash.
It’s so easy to get into the debt-buying business, Oliver did it himself.  He bought over $15 million in medical debt, affecting 9,000 people—and then he forgave every penny.
The emotional footage, seen below, catches several abusive and slimy debt-collectors on camera bragging about the illegal tactics they use, and then ends in the emotional celebration of forgiving the debt of 9,000 people with the single push of a button.
